The Frontier · The race to the present

The crown changes hands monthly

From GPT-5 in August 2025 to Claude Opus 4.8 in May 2026, the title of "best model in the world" was claimed and re-claimed on roughly a monthly clock, across five labs and two countries. By the time this book closes, there is no stable leader.

Reading the chart: each row is a lab; each marker is a flagship release placed on the month it shipped. Solid markers carry firm, day-level dates; dashed open markers are month-level. The dashed teal line marks the present, May 30, 2026, where the book closes.

For seventy years the question was whether a machine could think. By the spring of 2026 the question had quietly changed, not whether, but whose. And the answer was different almost every month.
